Security grades in private alarms in Spain: a complete guide to choosing the best alarm for your home or business.

Learn how to choose the appropriate security grade for your case and what Spanish and European legislation require for alarm systems.

Thanks to this article, you will learn about the different alarm grades that exist and whether your business or home is required to have a specific one.

private alarms in Spain: why not all are equally secure

Private alarms are an increasingly used tool to ensure the security of homes and businesses, but not all are equally secure. They can be activated in case of theft, intrusion, fire, or other emergencies and, to ensure proper operation and reduce false alarms, regulations establish different security grades.

These security grades determine the level of reliability, resistance, and capabilities of the system: from basic alarms without connection to an Alarm Receiving Center (ARC) to high-risk systems designed for critical installations. Choosing the correct grade is essential to comply with the law, protect your investment, and, in many cases, ensure your insurer maintains coverage.

Key point: mandatory Grade 2 or Grade 3 for systems connected to ARC

A very important aspect that some companies and individuals still overlook: currently, all systems connected to an Alarm Receiving Center must be at least Grade 2 or Grade 3, so some need to be upgraded. This regulatory change particularly affects businesses required to have security measures and homes that want to benefit from professionally verified protection.

The security grade of an alarm is a measure that indicates the level of reliability, resistance, and performance of the system and all its components: sensors, detectors, control panels, communications, video surveillance, etc.

The different grades establish a progressive classification based on risk, the nature and characteristics of the place to be protected, and whether connection to an Alarm Receiving Center or control center is required.

When choosing an alarm system, it is essential to assess:

  • The actual risk of the home or business (location, access points, value of assets, activity).
  • The minimum security grade required by law for your type of establishment.
  • Possible conditions from your insurance company linked to the alarm grade.
  • The need for connection to an Alarm Receiving Center (ARC) for video verification and immediate police notification.

How many security grades exist in private alarms? Is any mandatory?

In Spain, private alarms are classified into four security grades, established by the UNE-EN 50131-1 standard, which defines 4 alarm system grades based on risk. This European standard takes precedence over any national regulation and serves as the basis for Order INT/316/2011 of the Ministry of the Interior, which regulates the operation of alarm systems in the field of private security in Spain.

4 grados de alarmas en España

Grades 2, 3, and 4 correspond to professional alarm systems connected 24/7 to an Alarm Receiving Center (ARC).

Below, we develop each grade in more detail to help you identify what type of alarm you need.

Grade 1: low-risk alarms without connection to ARC

Grade 1 alarms are intended for installations with a low risk of intrusion and are characterized by being acoustic signaling systems not connected to an Alarm Receiving Center or control center.

They ususally include:

  • Warning signs and visible deterrent elements.
  • Acoustic siren to deter intruders.
  • Basic detection elements such as motion sensors and magnetic contacts on doors or windows.

As they are not connected to an ARC:

  • They do not allow external verification of intrusion.
  • There is no immediate professional notification to police or emergency services; everything depends on someone hearing the siren and deciding to call.

Therefore, they are considered very basic solutions and, in practice, are not recommended for businesses or homes with a certain level of risk.

Grade 2: low–medium risk alarms connected to an Alarm Receiving Center

Grade 2 alarms are connected to an Alarm Receiving Center (ARC) and are used in installations with a medium risk of intrusion. They are the most common in:

  • Homes with a garden or terrace.
  • Businesses with direct access from the street.
  • Offices and small shops.

These systems incorporate:

  • Motion detectors, some with integrated cameras to obtain real-time images.
  • More advanced detection elements: glass break detectors, video verification devices, door and window opening sensors.
  • Constant communication with the ARC to verify alarm triggers.

The main advantage of this type of alarm is that, being connected to a control center or security company, it allows immediate notification to the police in case of intrusion or property damage. In addition, it meets the minimum grade requirement for systems connected to ARC established by regulations from 31-12-2023.

Grade 3: medium–high risk alarms and businesses with legal security obligations

Grade 3 alarms are intended for establishments legally required to have reinforced security measures, as well as for commercial or industrial installations where connection to an alarm center or control center is required.

These systems must include:

  • Sophisticated detection elements, such as motion sensors with dual technology (for example, infrared + microwave).
  • Video surveillance systems that allow effective verification of alarm signals.
  • Measures to prevent the alarm from being neutralized with jammers or masking techniques.
  • Connection to an authorized Alarm Center with dual communication paths, improving resilience against sabotage.

They are recommended, and in many cases required, for:

  • Industrial installations with high-value assets.
  • Warehouses or sensitive businesses in terms of security (transport and logistics, luxury, high-value materials…).
  • Homes in high-risk residential areas or businesses with multiple access points.
Examples of establishments that must have Grade 3 systems

Private security regulations include several types of businesses that must mandatorily have systems of a certain grade, including:

  • Pharmacies.
  • Jewelry stores.
  • Banks and credit institutions.
  • Lottery administrations.
  • Gas stations and service stations.
  • Betting shops.
  • Gaming halls and bingo rooms (with varying requirements depending on size).
  • Gold buying and selling establishments.
  • Art galleries and antique shops.
  • Museums.
  • Mutual insurance entities.
  • Private security companies.
  • In general, any business where there are very dangerous products or especially attractive goods for theft.

Additionally, some of these establishments must legally have a seismic sensor and a Grade 4 safe, anchored if its weight is less than 2,000 kg. It is also common to complement the installation with:

  • Robbery or panic buttons.
  • Temperature and smoke detectors.
  • Fog cannons.
  • Safe rooms or armored chambers.

Grade 4: high-risk alarms and critical installations

Grade 4 alarms are reserved for high-risk installations and places that, by law, must have a certified alarm of this grade. These are extremely robust systems with very strict technical requirements, designed for critical environments where a security failure has a very high impact.

Some examples of installations requiring Grade 4:

  • Nuclear and chemical industries.
  • Military-type installations.
  • Facilities related to energy, health, and water (for example, water treatment plants).
  • Security companies that handle cash, valuables, precious metals, hazardous materials, or explosives.
  • Certain government facilities (tax, financial, research…).
  • Other key sectors such as transport and food, in particularly sensitive installations.

The complexity of these systems makes it essential to rely on certified security companies with specific high-risk experience.

Types of security systems offered by Seguridade A1 and how they adapt to each grade

At SEGURIDADE A1 we market Grade 2, 3, and 4 systems, connected to our own Alarm Receiving Center, and we customize each installation to guarantee maximum security and efficiency.

Wireless alarms

Wireless alarms are currently the most popular due to their efficiency and quick installation without construction work. They connect sensors to the control panel via signals (usually radio frequency), allowing:

  • Easy adaptation to any type of home or business premises, even in hard-to-access locations.
  • Fast, clean installations with a very discreet finish.
  • Integration of additional video surveillance systems to monitor specific areas of the business or home.

Wired alarms

Wired alarms connect sensors and the control panel via cable, increasing robustness against certain forms of sabotage (such as some types of jammers). They are especially used for:

  • Industrial areas.
  • Companies, factories, farms, estates, or warehouses with large perimeters to protect.

In return, installation may be somewhat longer and more costly, but it offers very high communication stability.

Hybrid systems

It is also possible to install hybrid systems, combining wired connections with wireless technology to take advantage of the best of both worlds: flexibility and robustness. This option is especially interesting in expansions of existing installations or in complex buildings.

Alarms with fees and connection to an Alarm Receiving Center (ARC)

Both wireless and wired solutions can be maintained through monthly fees. These fees mainly guarantee two key aspects:

  • Continuous connection with the Alarm Receiving Center (ARC), where security specialists verify and analyze all signals and alerts.
  • Periodic maintenance of the installation to ensure detectors function correctly and communication with the ARC is constant and reliable.

The SEGURIDADE A1 Alarm Receiving Center manages incidents and signals 24 hours a day, coordinating notification to police or emergency services when necessary.

At SEGURIDADE A1 we work every day to create safe environments by combining technology, experience, and human commitment.

Key regulations for security systems and private alarms

To understand security grades and their obligations, it is important to know the main applicable regulations:

Spanish and European legislation establishes a regulatory change that, after a transition period, sets that as of 31-12-2023 the installation of certified equipment is mandatory and that all systems connected to an Alarm Receiving Center must be at least Grade 2 or Grade 3. This implies that many older systems must be reviewed and, if necessary, updated.

Importance in the fight against illegal occupation

Alarms connected to an ARC with video verification and immediate police notification play a very important role in combating illegal occupation of homes. Detecting a case of occupation is key, as it constitutes a crime of trespassing under Article 202 of the Spanish Criminal Code, but if occupants provide documents that appear to prove they live there (utility bills, for example), police intervention becomes more complex and may require a court order.

Having appropriate-grade alarm systems, connected to ARC and with video verification, makes it easier to:

  • Quickly prove the intrusion.
  • Activate police notification protocols.
  • Reduce reaction time and the chances of consolidation of the occupation.

Additionally, different regional legislations add specific tools against illegal occupation, so each case should be assessed individually.

How to choose the appropriate alarm security grade for your case

Professional advice: the key to an effective strategy

In Spain, private security companies play an essential role in defining, installing, and maintaining solutions adapted to each space. Not all homes or businesses need the same level of protection, which is why it is crucial to rely on experts who understand real risks and can design a tailored system.

When choosing an alarm, you should consider:

  • The appropriate security grade for your home or business, based on risk level and activity.
  • The quality of the system components (detectors, communications, control panel, video surveillance).
  • Possible requirements from your insurance company, which often conditions the policy on the installed alarm grade.
  • Specific legal obligations of your sector, especially if you are in one of those classified as medium–high or high risk.

If the law requires a security system of a certain grade for your establishment, failure to comply may lead to financial penalties in case of inspection. Additionally, an incident in a business without the required alarm grade may cause issues with the insurer.

What to do if you need to upgrade or install an alarm system

If you have doubts about whether your alarm system complies with current regulations, or if you want to improve the protection of your home or business:

  • Check the installation date and the security grade of your current equipment.
  • Review your insurance policy conditions regarding the security system.
  • Take into account the obligation to have at least Grade 2 or Grade 3 in systems connected to ARC.
  • Assess whether your activity is included among those with specific security requirements (pharmacies, gas stations, jewelry stores, gaming, financial institutions, etc.).

At SEGURIDADE A1 we can help you:

  • Analyze the real risk of your installation.
  • Determine the necessary alarm grade according to regulations and your insurer.
